The Mediterranean Diet:
Lifeline to a Healthy Future
(Miami, FL)
Scientific research and medical efforts over the past century have led
to a constant and progressive decrease in infectious disease mortality.
At the same time, there has been a steady rise in cancer, cardiovascular,
and other diseases commonly related to aging. While researchers seek cures
for these latter illnesses, one of the best preventive measures is the
age-old Mediterranean diet, according to Dr. Dario Giugliano, professor
of Metabolic Diseases at the Second University of Naples.
"Years of documented research has demonstrated that foods eaten by
people living on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea help prevent heart
disease and some tumors," said Giugliano during a presentation of
his book, The Mediterranean Diet: Origins and Myths. "Because it
is well balanced, the Mediterranean diet guarantees a better quality of
life, a positive attitude and protection against several illnesses."
Dr. Giugliano takes readers along a historical and scientific path, tracing
the development of the Mediterranean diet in the hardcover, coffee-table-format
work, illustrated with nearly 400 color images. From the ancient Egyptians,
to the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Etruscans, and the Romans, the author
delves into the lifestyles and dietary habits of the peoples of mare nostrum.
Beyond this, Giugliano's medical credentials as one of Italy's top researchers
come through as he analyses the health factors and characteristics of
the Mediterranean diet; providing facts and figures from contemporary
research, while developing conclusions and guidelines for every-day living.
"The Lyon Diet Heart Study, conducted in France, for instance, illustrated
that a Mediterranean diet could reduce cardiovascular mortality by 70
percent. This is merely one area in which this diet, rich in fruits, vegetables,
olive oil and fish, produce beneficial effects on one's health.
"Throughout the book, I have attempted to convince readers that it
is necessary to follow a balanced diet, in combination with a healthy
lifestyle. Generally, these elements go hand-in-hand; those who eat properly
frequently exercise, do not smoke, and make a conscious effort where health
is concerned. This is the lifestyle we need to promote."
The Mediterranean Diet: Origins and Myths is published by Idelson-Gnocchi
Publishers, ISBN: 1928649114. The book is available from Baker & Taylor,
